Frequently Asked Questions

The best way to make an appointment is to call (02) 2962 1811.

You will generally require a referral from a medical practitioner before an appointment can be scheduled.

Please bring, or ideally send in before your appointment, the results of any previous medical assessments, specialist letters and if relevant, death certificates or autopsy reports.

Family members are welcome to attend your appointment but the focus will be on your concerns only.

If a family member requires assessment or genetic testing they will need to supply their own referral to claim the Medicare rebate for the consultation. This applies to partners for couple carrier screening or pre-pregnancy advice, and parents tested for segregation of genetic results identified in a child.

If multiple family members wish to be seen in the same consultation this will need to be arranged beforehand to allow sufficient time.

Initial appointments take at least 45 minutes. No 5-minute medicine!

Please arrive 10 minutes before your appointment to allow time to complete a New Patient form.

You will receive an in-depth assessment including personal and family history, and examination as required, with an explanation of the nature, benefits, limitations, and alternatives to genetic testing appropriate to you.  Written informed consent is a national and international requirement for genetic testing through any reputable laboratory.

You should expect to leave your consultation feeling that you understand how genetic changes may cause your condition, how they may be inherited, and what you may or may not gain from genetic testing.

Many genetic tests are now covered by Medicare and can be done at no cost to you.  For tests not currently covered by Medicare, you will be advised of the cost before proceeding.

Consultation Fees are separate to the cost of genetic testing.

An indicative fee for an initial 45-90-minute consultation including preparatory research and detailed report is $500, with a Medicare rebate (currently $250.65) returned to you.  Subsequent consultations for interpretation of results and management cost from $200 to $300 with rebates of $70- $125.

Reduced fees are available for Health Care Card holders, subsequent family members, and in special circumstances on request from your doctor.   The fee and gap payment will be quoted when booking your appointment.

To receive a Medicare rebate for the consultation you will need a referral from a doctor.  A referral from your GP will last for 12 months from the initial appointment. A referral from a specialist lasts for 3 months from the initial appointment. As some genetic results may take longer than that, a further referral may be needed.

Payment

Payment is required on the date of the consultation.

Please note that video call appointments may require you to pay for your consultation fee in full before your appointment.

Please let us know as soon as possible!

With long appointments, as well as hours of preparation, documentation and research behind the scenes, very few appointments are scheduled each week.  It is not always possible to prepare a new consultation in time if one cancels unexpectedly.  Confirming your appointment and avoiding cancellation at short notice is very important to prevent other families from missing out.

Repeated cancellation may mean we cannot offer you further appointments.

Please call (02) 4962 1811 during business hours a week before your appointment if at all possible so that we can offer the space to other patients on our waiting list.

A cancellation fee may apply for appointments cancelled without 48 hours’ notice.
